TWP's second garden with Sunrise Banks, this space was full of hydrangea, which aren't the most beneficial plant for pollinators, was enhanced with more than 200 native perennials and grasses, and even has a few chokecherry trees. The pedestrians and bikers now get a little taste of nature during their daily commute.
Garden Information:
  • Before: 1,000 square feet, mostly Hydrangea, Lillies and Black-Eyed Susan
  • Enhanced garden with more than 200 native perennials, including liatris, yellow and purple coneflower, lupine, dozens of native grasses, and three chokecherry trees
  • Thousands of commuters pass the garden daily and witness our mission, even stopping to snap a pic for Instagram (btw @wildflower_project)

This project is part of a series of classes TWP hosts through Saint Paul Community Education, called Blooming Boulevards. The first class, which had 18 participants, focused on converting medians and boulevards into pollinator gardens, helpful techniques and a plant species discussion.  
Garden Information (Phase 1):
  • Before: 500 sq. ft. of weedy turf​
  • Community Education Class with 18 participants
  • Planted 210 native plugs, including: Yarrow, Prairie Onion, Butterfly Weed, Purple Prairie Clover, Narrow Leaved Coneflower, Prairie Smoke, June Grass, Dwarf Blazing Star, Wild Lupine, Upland Goldenrod and Prairie Dropseed.

In 2017, TWP began its relationship with Sunrise Banks, converting a 200 square foot rock patch into a mirco-habitat amidst a concrete jungle. Located at the busy corner of University Ave. and Vandalia St. in Saint Paul, it provides a much needed oasis to hungry pollinators.
Garden Information:
  • Before: 200 sq. ft. of rock
  • Bermed the rock into a pile in the center, covered with organic compost
  • Planted 20 native grasses, 15 perennial flowers, including Liatris, Butterfly Weed and Black-Eyed Susan, and native wildflower seed sown in the middle
  • Bumble bees have officially been spotted at this garden!

Located at "Habitat" Matt's residence in South St. Anthony Park along a busy stretch of Raymond Ave. in Saint Paul. With more than 20 native species, pedestrians, bikers and motorists alike can't miss this dazzling garden. Now, with the help of Matt's neighbors, it has begun to expand. Someday, we hope, the entire street's boulevard will be filled with native plants.

Urban Growler Median Restoration

This project was TWP's first business partnership garden. In 2017, we cleared 2,000+ square feet of turf and seeded with a pollinator seed mix. In 2018, we returned and planted native fruiting trees, hundreds of native plugs, and even corn! Additionally, Urban Growler has been a gracious host of TWP's annual pollinator awareness event, Summer Buzz.
Garden Information:
  • Before: 2,000 sq. ft. of weedy turf​
  • Cut a beautiful meandering path through garden, installed rope barrier and TWP signage
  • Partnered with Urban Growler staff to plant hundreds of native plugs AND throw a pollinator party each summer
  • Native plants include: chokecherry tree, meadow blazingstar, sunflowers, yellow cone flower, lupine and dozens more

TWP's earliest partnership led to the establishment of this garden, on the north side of South St. Anthony Park, only yards outside the backdoor of TWP's headquarters. This space was transformed from invasive burdock and weeds into a thriving ecosystem and has more than enough room to continue growing.
Garden Information:
  • Removed burdock and other invasives
  • Planted dozens of native perennials and seed mix
  • 500+ square feet
  • Species include liatris, showy milk weed, yellow cone flower, purple cone flower, hyssop, and a native seed mix
  • Lots of new pollinator activity; dozens of species witnessed and photographed, including a swarm of monarchs
